PGA Tour Tries to Build Interest With Points Race

Tiger Woods is going to be a father. Jim Furyk is silently ranked No. 2 in the world. Phil Mickelson's head is still buried in a trash can at Winged Foot. And "a new era in golf" begins today in Hawaii. The winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship marks the start of the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour's seasonlong points competition. It's similar to NASCAR's Chase for the Cup, but golf certainly is a gentleman's game. Here's how it works: Players accumulate points based on their finishes in each of the 36 regularseason tournaments. There's a progressive cut in the playoffs to determine the top 30 players who will compete in The TOUR Championship.

The player with the highest point total after all this receives a $10 million bonus -- the largest single-bonus payout in sports.

But the real winners here are the fans. Instead of a lackluster climax to the season following the PGA Championship, we've got a reason to watch.

Jim Furyk will show up. Let's hope Tiger Woods and Phil will, too.
