Mickelson lingers in shadow

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Phil Mickelson succeeded Tiger Woods into the interview room at the Winged Foot Golf Club yesterday. For those seeking a symbolic moment, the sequence was hard to ignore.

One, after all, is chasing the other, though Woods doesn’t see it that way. With the U.S. Open due to begin tomorrow, Mickelson is seeking a third straight victory in a major championship. That fact prompted the most obvious question to Woods, who has not played since the Masters, making his first appearance since the death of his father, Earl.

Does Woods now consider this a rivalry?

“Well, you keep asking me things like that,” Woods said. “You have runs where Ernie (Els) was there for a little bit, then Vijay (Singh), Goose (Retief Goosen) and now Phil. I suppose as long as I can be part of that conversation, it’s never a bad thing.”

Woods has won 10 majors to Mickelson’s three. With a victory this week, Mickelson would have a chance at duplicating Woods’ feat from 2000-01 when he held all four major titles at one time.

“I’m not trying to win three, I’m just trying to win one,” Mickelson said. “I’ve had some success in this event where I’ve come close, losing by a shot or 2, three times finishing second. I still have had some success here, and all I’m trying to do is be successful on this one golf course at this one event.”
