Golf courses, rec centres booming: StatsCan
Golf courses, recreation centres and ski hills reaped financial rewards as an increasing number of Canadians tried to get fit in 2004, Statistics Canada says.
In a report released Monday, it said fitness and recreation centres reported operating revenues of more than $1.5 billion for the year, up 20.8 per cent from 2003.
At the same time, golf courses and country clubs increased revenues by 15.1 per cent, reporting $2.3 billion in operating revenues.
Spectator sports, including professional teams and horse racing, reported a 4.9 per cent hike in revenues to $2.3 billion.
Ski hills had a more modest 2.6 per cent rise in revenues, but reported a 11.3 per cent rise in profits.
The boom reflects the huge increase in the number of golfers, "rising personal incomes, and increasing awareness of health and fitness among the burgeoning set of baby boomers," the report said.
Statistics Canada compiled the information from data collected in its annual survey of arts, entertainment and recreation services.
