Cancer claims Tiger's father
There is a statistic the PGA Tour keeps called "Bounce Back." It measures a golfer's ability to follow a bogey with a birdie. It's the closest thing the tour has to measuring mental fortitude.
Tiger Woods rarely has finished outside the top 20 in that category in nine full seasons on tour and twice has finished first. But now he is faced with the biggest "bounce back" situation of his life.
Woods' father, Earl, died Wednesday at his home in Cypress, Calif., of complications from a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 74.
The golf world has lost the patriarch of its First Family and the architect who helped build one of the sport's greatest players. Of course, to his son, Earl was so much more.
